In 1865, Mendel laid down the foundational principle of genetic inheritance. As per Mendel’s Law of Segregation, individuals have two sets of genes, and each parent transmits only one set to their offspring. Consequently, we inherit half of our genes from our mother and half from our father, with genetic relatedness diminishing by half with each progressively more distant branch in our family tree. Aligned with Mendel’s law, the KinTouch Paternity +4 Test employs genome wide crossover hybridization to ascertain the genetic relatedness between two individuals. This is achieved by comparing the DNA sequence in the context of over 3 million SNPs of the human genome. Accordingly, the sequence similarity for 1st and 2nd-degree kinship can be linked to 50% and a 25% genomic sequence similarity, respectively. This approach offers a straightforward and precise method to evaluate genetic relatedness among our close relatives.
